Therapy is unique in that it differs from day-to-day conversations. Its benefit is in the skill of the therapist being curious. This then poses the question of where else curiosity exists in our conversations and how we harness this, in a world that is perhaps a little more technology driven than seven years ago. I notice how technology is influencing our thinking and our conversations, in ways that are so subtle that perhaps we do not notice this? I am curious about the role of artificial intelligence (A.I). I see the value of technology and how it can be useful, but what I notice is that it lacks is curiosity and collaboration.

Let’s take for example, a word exchange between an individual and artificial intelligence (A.I). In therapy we explore, what is it that is informing your thinking. It is a place of and for discovery. The A.I. exchange is one of sharing existing data with you.

In my website pages, I highlight the importance of understanding context. Such as, that of, our gender, our race, our religion, our income, our education attainment, our experience of being a child, our experience of being an adult, a partner, a relative, a husband/a wife. A.I. is not curious about this and believe me, it matters more than we realise, or pay attention too! We invite meaning making in therapy. We gain a sense of satisfaction from listening and understanding, it is useful beyond the therapy session!

When we invite each other to be curious. I would argue that we dance differently with questions, beliefs, actions and emotions. We create the opportunity for feedback. We listen differently!  The gift is then exploring what it is that is possible with this understanding, what opportunities does it present and are they ones we like?

Therapy is the space in which to harness the creative potential that emerges from a curious conversation, which often happens best with another, in a room, with a hot drink!
